Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to utilize the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
